Understanding How We Work with Dogs With Behavioral Challenges

If you’re considering private training with K9 Turbo for a dog with behavioral concerns like reactivity, aggression, or other challenging behaviors, we want you to understand our methodology before you begin. Our goal is to help you determine if our approach aligns with what you’re looking for, so you can make the best decision for you and your dog.

Our System

At K9 Turbo Training, we address behavioral challenges through a comprehensive multi-step process that creates lasting, positive change. This includes working together implement an individualized plan in each of the following areas:

1. Management to Prevent Rehearsal

We implement management strategies to prevent your dog from practicing problematic behaviors while also protecting them from overwhelming experiences. When dogs display reactive, anxious, or aggressive behaviors, they’re communicating that they’re experiencing significant emotional distress. Just like any skill, the more a dog practices these responses, the stronger those patterns become. Additionally, each exposure to situations that trigger intense fear or anxiety can worsen their emotional state and work against building positive associations.

We’ll create a customized management plan for your dog so that they don’t continue rehearsing these responses while we work on solutions. This might include environmental changes, leash protocols, or specific routines that set your dog up for success rather than putting them in situations where they’re likely to struggle.

This is often the most crucial component of lasting behavior change. We work to help your dog develop positive associations with things that currently trigger them. Whether your dog becomes anxious around strangers, reactive toward other dogs, or panicked when left alone, our goal is to change how they feel about these situations.

Many dogs with behavioral challenges are experiencing fear, anxiety, frustration, or overarousal. Simply teaching them to “behave” without addressing these underlying emotions rarely creates reliable, long-term improvement. Instead, we focus on helping your dog feel better about their triggers, which naturally leads to better behavior choices.

3. Teaching Essential Skills

If your dog is consistently struggling in the same situations, they likely don’t have the skills they need to be successful. We help identify what skills your dog is lacking and create a plan so they can learn what they need to navigate these environments successfully. This includes training practical cues like emergency turns, recall, and touch behaviors that you can use together to navigate difficult moments in real time. We also work on communication skills for dogs who need to learn how to respond to cutoff signals or communicate more effectively with other dogs.

These skills are taught using positive reinforcement, setting your dog up for success by practicing in situations where they can be successful and gradually building their confidence and proficiency with each behavior.

4. Mental and Physical Enrichment Plan

A dog eats from an enrichment toy. We’ll implement a complete enrichment program for your dog that ensures all of their needs are met in a whole-picture way. This is especially important for working or high-drive dogs, energetic dogs, or dogs who are alone for longer periods of time. Many dogs’ needs are under-met, and for dogs already struggling with emotional or behavioral issues, inadequate enrichment can be detrimental, often resulting in an increase in behavior problems and other unwanted side effects.

We’ll help you develop an enrichment program that includes everything from special feeding methods to specific types of outings, different approaches to walking and exercising your dog, and creative ways to provide mental stimulation that supports their emotional health and overall wellbeing.

5. Gradual Exposure and Skill Building

As your dog becomes successful with their new skills and shows improved emotional responses, we gradually decrease management restrictions and slowly increase exposure to more challenging scenarios. Like a student mastering new content, we only add difficulty as your dog demonstrates readiness and success at each level.

This systematic approach allows your dog to practice their developing skills in increasingly complex real-world situations, ultimately achieving your training goals while maintaining their confidence and emotional wellbeing.

Our Training Philosophy

We follow the guidelines established by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB), which recommends that only reward-based training methods are used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems. This approach is supported by extensive scientific research showing that reward-based training methods are more effective than aversive methods and better for both animal welfare and the human-animal bond. Additionally, for dogs with behavioral challenges that stem from fear, anxiety, or stress, adding punishment often makes the underlying emotional state worse, even if it temporarily suppresses the visible behavior. For this reason, we never use methods that involve punishment or correction during the learning process.
